Developed over two years, Drawing Data comprises hand-drawn works and digital prints that reinterpret running data into an expressive and subjective form. Using charcoal, pastel, pencil, and ink, the drawings visualise personal reflections and physical sensations—fatigue, exhilaration, self-doubt, and relief—through gestural marks and diaristic text. Inspired by feminist critiques of data systems, the work builds on concepts from Data Feminism (D’Ignazio & Klein) to challenge the neutrality of quantified self-tracking. Rather than reinforcing achievement and optimisation, these drawings foreground imperfection, bodily messiness, and the emotional landscape of endurance.
The drawings were made in Sydney, Dubai and Tokyo between 2022 and 2024. They exhibited in the exhibition Running at Piknic in Seoul, South Korea in 2024. Read more here: https://theconversation.com/drawing-data-i-make-art-from-the-bodily-experience-of-long-distance-running-182762
